Johanna Kern: There is no such day when I wouldn’t fall in love with life again
“There are no two identical people, and there are no two identical lives,” says Johanna Kern, award-winning author of the book “Master and the Green-Eyed Hope”– a story about a journey of spiritual development leading to happiness, awareness and true fulfillment. The book is based on the author’s experiences, which led this Canadian film director/producer to understanding how life can be fully enjoyed.
Onet:What was your life like before you began your spiritual journey? Did you feel that something was missing?
Johanna Kern: My life has always been filled to the brim with professional work. People in the creative fields don’t have regular working hours, therefore I was working practically all the time. I didn’t lack passion for life or motivation to reach deeper inside in search for my own inner truth. Yet throughout the entire race to chase my dreams and follow my ambitions – I wasn’t able to find the very truth I was looking for.
Yes, something was always missing. And no professional success could give it to me. What was missing in my life? Peace of heart and confidence that my life was heading towards true fulfillment and happiness. Neither professional fulfillment, nor successes in achieving my goals and fulfilling my dreams felt like true happiness. I still felt the need for constant struggle with life, for obsessive achieving one thing after another. But nothing was ever able to fill the void, which I increasingly began to feel inside. It made me more and more confused, and I didn’t know what to do to find a real meaning and true value of my life. It felt like everything I did was not what I should be doing with my life. I had my dream job, and it should bring happiness. But deep down I heard my heart speaking louder and louder to me: “That’s not the way”.
Onet:And what happened? Was it a gradual discovery that there is “something more”, a transformation of the way you were thinking, or maybe there was one specific event that marked the beginning of your spiritual evolution?
Johanna Kern: Years ago, after my immigration from Europe to Canada, the growing sense of emptiness at my very core became even more profound against the new environment in which I was trying to find myself. I had no solid foundations within that would allow me to feel safe and confident in all conditions.
Since I was not yet in tune with my own truth, any external conditions could easily affect the way I thought about myself. When we have not yet developed a genuine sense of inner happiness, we usually experience the typical “swing effect”: when things go well – all is great, when things go wrong – all is bad. We don’t know how to maintain peace of mind and accept the events occurring in our life as opportunities for our further development. We function in a robotic way, most of the time on automatic pilot, and when someone presses our buttons – it causes our automatic reactions. Forme it was exactly like that. Leaving Europe caused a lot of stress, and since my “old world” entirely collapsed, I had to find a really honest approach to life, and not just chase my daydreams. Life is a gift. I didn’t understand it before. Blinded by some of my not so very important ambitions, I didn’t know my true value or the true value of life.
Onet:What kinds of ways/practices of spiritual development have you tried on your journey? Were there any that appealed to you?
Johanna Kern: It was not that I was looking for answers to my questions in any esoteric or philosophical beliefs. My dear life as usual surprised me, leading me onto the most appropriate path for me. I believe that our own heart always finds what’s best for us, if only we allow ourselves to trust life and ourselves. At a time when I began to experience a true personal spiritual evolution, which was in the early 90s of the last century, there was no easy access to the Internet to find the messages that could somehow inspire me. No, I didn’t seek any particular practices and didn’t know of any particular ways. Everything happened for me in a spontaneous, natural way and – to my surprise – very tangibly. It was very real, and my life really changed. One can say, that there wasn’t much room for theory in my life, since it became entirely a “hands-on” experience.
Onet: How has the new knowledge and view of the world changed your daily life?
Johanna Kern: Diametrically. There is no such day when I wouldn’t fall in love with life again. It is an amazing journey, which has no purpose to reach any goal, because its very purpose is to fully feel our own existence, while discovering more and more layers of admiration for life and the beauty of each day. Nothing is impossible or difficult. Nothing is depressing or burdensome. Everything is needed, magical and real. This truth is reflected in the quiet joy of life and appreciation of every moment.
Onet:Imagine that you meet a person who is at the beginning of the spiritual journey and needs a guide. What would you advise him/her? And what basic wisdom would you pass to them to encourage them on their way?
Johanna Kern: I would say: “Trust your own Heart. The one spelled with a capital letter”. I mean that part of us where our own truth speaks whenever we listen to its voice. I sometimes use the word “Heart”, when I talk about the essence of who we are. Our true inner being, free of any limitations, conditions or fear. Only this part of ourselves can we fully trust, and only our Heart can lead us where we are meant to be. Each of us is unique, one among billions. Each of us finds his/her own way to our inner truth. There are no two identical people, and there are no two identical lives. Not only is each person unique, but also each animal, plant, stone, grain of sand, a drop of water or a snowflake.
When we realize the beauty and importance of our existence, we naturally expand our vision of ourselves and see our true potential. We learn how to appreciate, embrace and respect who we are, who we have become and who we are yet to be. Each of us has his/her own unique purpose of existence on our planet. Each of us is born to live and progress in happiness and fulfillment.
The only recipe for becoming who we are meant to become is to listen to our inner “barometer of truth.” Let us remember that life wisdom is the knowledge of our Heart, while life experience is the knowledge of our Mind. We can acquire our life experience over time. But to gain life wisdom, we need to tune into our timeless Heart.
