9 Pennies Can Change Your Life
A Game to Win a Better Life
Copyright: Johanna Kern
Contrary to many beliefs, our destiny is not fixed. We don’t need to remain trapped in circumstances that no longer satisfy us.
IT DOESN’T HAVE TO TAKE HARD WORK OR STRUGGLE TO CHANGE WHAT YOU WANT.
DESCRIPTION
In this game, you are the only player—and the winner. You are playing against yourself.
You cannot lose: no matter the outcome, you benefit—either by achieving your goal or by gaining the experience needed for the next round.
RULES
Have fun!
The less you worry about the outcome, the more effective you become.
PREPARATION
Find a safe and pleasant place in your home or at work/school where you can place a box or container for collecting your nine pennies.
We will call this your Better Life Account (BLA).
The coins you collect will be called Investment Pennies (IPs).
Your IPs accumulate at the end of each round and give you the power to obtain one goal at a time, such as:
A BETTER JOB — A HAPPY RELATIONSHIP — OR THE FULFILLMENT OF A DREAM.
NOTE: If you have multiple goals, start a separate round for each.
The game was first presented during Johanna Kern’s nine-episode radio series “The Life You Want Is Yours”, aired on British Islanders Radio.

A Short Story of Two Brothers and Nine Pennies
(Read before continuing.)
Two brothers were born into a wealthy family in a peaceful, prosperous country. The older brother was to inherit everything: title, land, and fortune. The younger brother would remain dependent on his goodwill.
The citizens lived comfortably, repeating traditions that had served them for centuries. Nothing ever changed—because nothing seemed broken.
When the brothers matured, the elder managed the estate while the younger traveled among the people.
He soon realized that although everyone lived without fear, their lives had grown stagnant. By isolating themselves from change, they had halted progress—and without progress, regression begins.
Though their needs were met, many were becoming sad, ill, or depressed. No one seemed to enjoy life. When he tried to discuss this, people resisted. Fear of change held them captive.
Unable to help them, he chose to seek a different fate.
Leaving was only possible by plane—and his brother owned one.
As the aircraft prepared for takeoff, he felt it weighed down. Turning back, he saw his older brother clinging to the tail.
“Let go!” he shouted.
The brothers struggled until the younger stopped the engine, stepped down, and walked away.
“Where are you going?” his brother yelled. “You have nothing!”
He shrugged and continued.
He didn’t know where he was headed—only that it felt right.
Soon he reached a forest beside a river, entered it, discovered a hidden path, and followed it until it led to a steep hill.
Exhausted, he climbed anyway.
At the top stood a bridge crossing to another land. Looking back, joy filled him.
“I am free,” he whispered.
He reached into his pocket.
“Nine pennies,” he smiled. “That’s all I have.”
Two strangers appeared.
“Nine pennies?” one repeated. “That’s plenty—to change everything.”
“We don’t use money,” said the other. “But we play a game—Penny for Your Thoughts. Nine pennies can change everything if you buy the right thoughts.”
The younger brother bowed in gratitude.
And that is how he found a better life.
