Becoming Addicted to Feeling Good
Our Innate Joy and Inner Listening
Johanna Kern
I treat you, as I treat myself. And I am willing to treat myself well.
When there are moments I forget or neglect to treat myself well – that is with respect, tenderness, and love – my addiction to feeling good kicks in and I’m back on track.
Our innate joy always reminds us that we are a part of something so magnificent and benevolent – that if only for that single reason, we want to be present in the “here and now”, growing into our better selves, and seeing others grow and expand their magnificence.
All of nature expresses its joy of living, in one way or another. Notice how playful birds and animals are, and how vegetation thrives. Our own innate joy is no different than that. And once we find it, we get addicted to it.
Why? Because without it we feel lost in the world, we experience anxiety or aggression, we disapprove of others and ourselves, we begin to hate, and we begin to destroy.
There is a simple and beautiful story told by St. Francis of Assisi: “I said to the almond tree: ‘Sister, speak to me of God’ – and the almond tree blossomed.”
Our innate joy can come only from within.
To find it and live it – we need to connect with our inner wisdom, which comes from listening to our Heart.
In the Master Teachings of HOPE, we use the word “Heart” to describe the core of our essence, our “pure inner person.” The part of us where we hold our own, beautiful truth, free of any conditioning and fears.
When we hear the “voice” of our Heart, we feel innate joy. There is no mistake about it. And such joy is a much greater motivator in life than fear.
We are biologically wired to feel fear when we need to escape, hide, fight back, or attack. (Just as our ancestors did when meeting a wild animal on their path or fighting for their food, freedom, tribe, or territory.) Fear by default is meant to motivate us to short-term action. And, being a low-frequency vibration, fear burns us out mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually.
On the other hand – our innate joy helps us thrive in life.
Its high-vibration energy positively affects our well-being in every way. When we are filled with the joy of life, our achievements and success are long-lived. We don’t give in to prolonged stress when we face obstacles – we simply overcome them.
Here are some simple steps to finding our innate joy by practicing our inner listening:
Find a comfortable position. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Continue breathing slowly, while doing the following:
Imagine that with each inhalation every cell in your body lights up with golden light, and that when you exhale, your breath leaves your body together with everything you don’t need.
NOTE: If you cannot easily picture images in your mind – try to feel/know it is happening instead of trying to imagine it.
Try not to picture anything else but a small grayish cloud leaving you each time. Stick to those images firmly, and give them labels:
“My regret (sadness, guilt, anxiety, or anger) leaves me now. It’s an emotion, that’s all.”
“My expectations (related to a particular outcome) leave me now. It’s my mind’s idea of “how” things should be, that’s all.”
“My disappointment (in others or oneself) leaves me now. It’s my ego’s vision of myself, that’s all.”
“My pain (physical pain or discomfort) leaves me now. It’s a physical sensation, that’s all.”
Release everything that keeps coming to your mind in that way, until you find yourself looking for things to release from your distant past.
This is a moment to stop and say to yourself:
“That is my past. It exists only in my mind. Now is not the time to focus on my mind.”
When you release that way everything that keeps you from hearing the “voice” of your Heart, your breath starts flowing in and out without any words, images, or feelings. At that moment, there is nothing but silence. At that moment, let yourself smile. Take another deep breath and open your eyes while exhaling.
Yes, you are feeling good. You just discovered that inner silence is the language of your Heart. Anything that is in alignment with it comes naturally to you. Everything else becomes an unwanted junk. Your innate joy becomes your Barometer of Truth for all you need to think, feel, do, or create on a particular day.
There are no bells or fireworks attached to that kind of feeling. Instead, you may experience some relief and peace, or feel overwhelming love – coming from no other source, than your own Heart.
And now – you are addicted to feeling good. Enjoy!
